Following the major flooding in Nepal, BOOKOFF GROUP launched an initiative to provide emergency assistance to affected areas through Peace Winds Japan by donating unwanted items via its “Kimochi-to.” doorstep buyback donation service.
On 26 August 2026, major flooding and landslides occurred in Rasuwa District near the border between Nepal and China, causing extensive damage to infrastructure, including homes, roads, bridges and power-generation facilities. As of 11 September, reports put the number of dead at 626, missing or unreachable at 2,426, and injured at 101. At least 10,000 households are estimated to have lost their homes, but the full extent of the damage remains unknown.
As part of its support for the affected areas, BOOKOFF launched a program in cooperation with Peace Winds Japan under which unwanted books, CDs, DVDs and game software can be submitted through the “Kimochi-to.” doorstep buyback donation service and used for emergency assistance on the ground. Relief supplies are already being provided, including cooking utensils and gas canisters for 100 households in the affected area.
“Kimochi-to.” is a mechanism through which the purchase amount is donated to organizations and local governments as a contribution. The purchase amounts generated under this emergency assistance program are scheduled to be used to provide relief supplies and other assistance in the affected areas. Cumulative donations totaled ¥532.15 million as of the end of August 2026, and the number of partner and recipient organizations stood at 158.
BOOKOFF plans to continue promoting social contribution and a circular society through reuse, while valuing the desire to “put items that are no longer needed to use for someone else.” It also plans to prepare for future disaster assistance, including surveys of support needs in affected areas, emergency relief-supply assistance and support for administrative office operating costs.
