The Japan Chain Stores Association announced an overview of chain-store sales for August. The association's member companies numbered 45 and its stores totalled 9,693, while total sales were ¥1.1148 trillion. Sales were up 0.2% year on year after store-count adjustment.
Compared with the previous year, when temperatures reached record highs, temperatures in eastern Japan were around normal in August. As a result, some seasonal food products struggled, although higher retail prices covered the shortfall in sales value. Apparel saw a recovery in seasonal products, but growth stalled from the middle of the month, partly due to the effects of typhoons and torrential rain.
