The Nikkei 225 reached the 67,000 level for the first time during the morning session on 1 June, setting a record closing high. However, more than 70% of stocks declined, leaving a limited number of AI-related stocks to support the market.
In trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange during the morning session on 1 June, the Nikkei 225 rose 708.74 points from the previous Friday to 67,038.24, entering the 67,000 range for the first time. The gain temporarily widened to about 901 points during the 10 a.m. hour, with the index reaching an intraday high of 67,231.28.
Among individual stocks, record highs since listing by AI-related stocks including SoftBank Group and Kioxia lifted the market, while buying of stock index futures by overseas speculative investors drove trading.
TOPIX edged lower, and more than 70% of stocks in the entire TSE Prime Market declined, limiting the advance to a handful of large-cap stocks. Information and communications and services stocks rose, while mining, transport equipment and pharmaceutical stocks fell.
The market's focus has now shifted to what happens next, with attention on whether the futures-led advance will continue or profit-taking will spread after the rally pauses.
