The US Treasury announced an increase in its buybacks of long-term Treasuries. The market appears to have focused on the trilemma of securing liquidity while curbing excessive increases in long-term interest rates.
On 19 August, the US Treasury unexpectedly announced a policy to double its buybacks of long-term Treasuries. While aiming to maintain liquidity, the move also signaled that the current bond market is viewed as undervalued.
The buybacks form part of the Treasury’s regular buyback operations and are intended to secure liquidity in the financial markets, but the doubling was interpreted as sending a stronger signal to the interest-rate market. Long-term interest rates temporarily declined immediately after the announcement, but turned higher again the following day.
Market participants are closely watching how the move relates to the “trilemma,” and its impact on the foreign-exchange and interest-rate markets is expected to remain under observation.
