The Nikkei average continued to decline in the morning session, falling ¥275.12 to ¥61,913.51. While declines in AI- and semiconductor-related stocks weighed on the market, advancers outnumbered decliners on the TSE Prime Market and TOPIX remained firm.
The Nikkei average continued to decline in the morning session in Tokyo, falling ¥275.12 from the previous business day to ¥61,913.51. Buying initially prevailed against a backdrop of gains in U.S. stocks following the midterm elections, but declines in AI- and semiconductor-related stocks weighed on the market as a whole.
The 3 major U.S. indexes rose as the market incorporated the midterm election results. The Democratic Party's advance intensified concern over AI investment, sending high-priced semiconductor-related stocks sharply lower and weighing on the Nikkei. Export-related stocks, meanwhile, were relatively firm as the possibility of tariff removal emerged.
TOPIX ended the morning session up 1.54% at 3,955.29 points, while trading value on the TSE Prime Market was ¥5.708057 trillion. Of the TSE's 33 sectors, 26 rose and 7 fell. Toyota Motor rose, while Sony Group reached a new year-to-date high.
Declines in semiconductor-related stocks were a major factor in their contribution to the index's decline, with Advantest, Kioxia HDG and SoftBank Group among those falling sharply. Major export-related stocks, by contrast, generally remained firm.
