KAYAC announced that it had acquired Shuri Tofu, an island tofu manufacturer in Naha, and aims to expand its business in Okinawa. The acquisition price was not disclosed, and the company plans to rebuild the aging factory and increase production.
KAYAC announced on the 29th that it would make Shuri Tofu in Okinawa Prefecture a subsidiary. Through the succession of the business of the company, which carries on the traditional production of Okinawan island tofu, KAYAC will strengthen its operations in Okinawa.
Shuri Tofu was founded in 1969. Even after changing its name from Teruya Shokuhin, the business has continued under President Teruya Yuki (照屋ゆき). The company plans to rebuild the factory, including its aging sections, and aims to increase production from just under 1 ton per day to approximately 2 to 2.5 times that level.
At an M&A closing ceremony held in Naha the same day, KAYAC President Yanagisawa Daisuke (柳沢大輔) suggested that the company would pursue collaboration across a range of industries to expand its business in Okinawa. KAYAC is therefore considering further M&A in Okinawa as a base of operations.
KAYAC has been expanding its activities in Okinawa and pursued a locally focused management strategy, including establishing a second headquarters in Naha in 2024. The company is also reported to be considering collaboration in business areas beyond island tofu.
