Following TRIAL Holdings' acquisition, a policy was announced to convert approximately 30 of Seiyu's large-format stores to “Trial Seiyu.” As a result, a number of stores have closed or temporarily suspended operations, and attention is focused on future store operations.
Seiyu has been rooted in local communities for many years, but following TRIAL Holdings' acquisition in July 2025, its medium-term plan set out a policy of converting approximately 30 large-format stores from the fiscal year ending June 2027. Following conversion, the stores are expected to operate under a new Trial Seiyu format combining integrated private-label products from both companies with a low-price strategy.
As specific conversion sites, the Hanakoganei store opened in November 2025, while the Musashi-Shinjo store and Futamatagawa store are scheduled to convert to Trial Seiyu in 2026. During the same period, shopping experiences at some medium- and small-format stores are also expected to be refreshed, as the introduction of TRIAL's private-label products gathers momentum.
A number of stores have also closed or temporarily suspended operations. The Yamashina store closed on 30 September 2026, while the Machida store, LIVIN Hikarigaoka store, and Sugamo store temporarily ceased operations on 6 September, 25 September, and 8 October, respectively. These stores are scheduled to reopen following renovations, so the locations themselves are not being permanently withdrawn.
The conversion to Trial Seiyu is part of the store reorganisation following the acquisition in July 2025. TRIAL also plans to roll out approximately 100 TRIAL GO stores over the next three years, and is expected to strengthen sales of the group's private-label products, primarily through small-format stores in central urban areas.
