Japan and the United States disclosed plans for Japan to invest $21 billion and build a semiconductor plant in New York State as the third project under the “U.S. investment” initiative, Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Akazawa Ryosei (赤沢 亮正) said. The two countries are expected to provide support for the construction, including land and power.
The project is positioned as the first semiconductor manufacturing project carried out under the Japan-U.S. Strategic Investment Initiative. Minister Akazawa emphasized the significance of Japan and the United States working together to secure a competitive advantage in the AI era.
Previous announcements included artificial diamond manufacturing and a gas-fired power plant as the first project, and a small modular reactor as the second. This is the third project.
Meanwhile, President Trump welcomed the plan on social media as “another massive investment in America.” Under the terms for reducing high tariffs agreed by Japan and the United States last July, Japan is reportedly to invest approximately $550 billion, or ¥80 trillion in total.
