At a press conference following the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting, BOJ Governor Ueda Kazuo (植田 和男) indicated that the Bank would discuss its decision on additional rate hikes at each meeting, including the next one. He also disclosed that he had met with US Treasury Secretary Bessent (ベッセント) on 30 August, but declined to comment on the details.
Ueda (植田 和男) said that the underlying inflation rate had come “quite close” to the 2% target, and stressed that the Bank intends to continue adjusting the degree of monetary accommodation through rate hikes because financial conditions remain accommodative.
The BOJ is scheduled to hold a monetary policy meeting on 17 and 18 September Japan time, indicating that it intends to determine its policy going forward while continuing its dialogue with the market.
The remarks are being interpreted as showing that the BOJ will continue to discuss cautiously the direction of interest rate policy underlying consultations between Japan and the United States.
