The Ministry of Finance released Japan's balance of payments for January through June this year, showing a current account surplus of ¥17.4292 trillion, the largest first-half surplus on record.
The widening of the surplus was attributed to increased exports of semiconductors and electronic components, with the surplus expanding by approximately ¥3.2 trillion from the same period a year earlier.
Meanwhile, the current account recorded a deficit of ¥92.3 billion in June, the first monthly deficit in 17 months, since January last year.
The main factor behind the deficit was an increase in dividend payments to overseas companies and other investors that had invested in Japan.
