BYD will introduce the kei-class vehicle “Rakko” for the Japanese market in July 2026. The reason it was newly developed to meet Japan's unique kei-car standards is reportedly to raise awareness and brand value in the Japanese market.
BYD made a large-scale exhibition at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, clearly demonstrating its interest in the Japanese market. Senior executives, including President Wang Chuanfu (王伝福), who visited Japan to assess local demand for cars, also took note of the prominence of kei cars in Japan.
As a result, BYD viewed acceptance by Japanese customers as highly significant to it as an automaker and determined that kei cars were essential to establishing a firm foothold in the Japanese market. It began developing a kei car in-house as a project personally backed by the president.
The introduction of Rakko is seen as part of a strategy based on Japan's domestic competitive environment rather than on globally standard vehicle classes, with the aim of enhancing brand value in the Japanese market beyond simply gaining market share. Attention will focus on future sales developments and the response in the Japanese market.
The article says that BYD places particular importance on the Japanese market and is developing vehicle models tailored to the needs of Japanese customers.
