SOMPO Holdings and MISUMI Group Inc. have announced plans to develop Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) personnel in-house. The stated aim is to strengthen a system in which FDE-type projects work directly with frontline operations and handle the process consistently from identifying issues through implementation.
The three elements considered essential to the success of an FDE-type project are the frontline “user,” “issue” and “data.” The view presented is that meeting all three enables issues to be resolved quickly.
The challenges to broader adoption are said to include establishing a value-based compensation structure and developing talent. Frontline comments were also introduced, including that once a request is communicated, something operational is produced within a few days, with the expansion of FDE and the challenges of operating it discussed in parallel.
