The Nikkei 225 extended its decline after opening. Against the backdrop of movements in US equities and long-term interest rates, selling dominated and the Tokyo market’s decline deepened.
The Nikkei 225 was down ¥747 as of 9:05 a.m., with selling leading the Tokyo market lower today. Although the Dow edged higher in the US market, the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.59% and the SOX Index dropped 6.72%, weighing on AI-related and semiconductor stocks.
Persistently high crude oil prices in overseas markets also made investor sentiment more cautious. At the same time, the Dow had at times continued a modest third consecutive daily gain the previous day, prompting some to view this as a potential support for the domestic market.
In addition to Japanese long-term interest rates remaining soft, the decline in US long-term interest rates provided some reassurance. Meanwhile, some saw investor interest in companies with strong earnings as a potential support for share prices, as first-half earnings announcements by Japanese companies with March year-ends will gather pace from next week.
Selling dominated at the opening stage, and the Nikkei 225 has since extended its decline.
