Fifteen Suijo Buildings line approximately 800 meters through central Toyohashi and are known as a historic group of buildings.
Built during the period of rapid economic growth amid land shortages, the buildings are concrete structures constructed over a culverted irrigation channel. Buildings standing over waterways are said to be rare in Japan. The shopping district went through periods of decline, but the number of new stores has now increased and it has regained its vitality.
