TOPPAN Holdings will launch a business in October 2026 providing end-to-end support for individuals and small businesses generating carbon credits. Through projects registered under the J-Credit Scheme, it will aggregate emissions reductions, convert them into credits, sell the credits and return the proceeds.
TOPPAN, a group company of TOPPAN Holdings, will launch a business providing end-to-end support for greenhouse gas emissions reduction activities by individuals and small businesses, from support for credit generation and data collection through certification applications, credit sales and distribution of proceeds. As initial projects, the rice paddy midseason drainage extension project and biochar project promoted by ICT KŌBŌ IIZUNA in Iizuna Town, Nagano Prefecture, were registered as program-type projects under the J-Credit Scheme on 9 October 2026. This will enable the collection and calculation of emissions reductions from multiple individual farmers and small businesses, as well as applications for credit certification and the return of sales proceeds. Digital technologies, including farm-recording apps and dedicated application forms, will be used to collect data and reduce the burden on farmers.
A key feature of the business is its integrated support from reduction activities through applications and the return of proceeds. Reduction volumes from multiple farmers and businesses participating in the rice paddy midseason drainage extension project and biochar project will be aggregated in bulk to improve the efficiency of credit generation. Digital tools will also reduce the burden on farmers of recording performance data. Through these measures, the business aims to increase the added value of regional agriculture while reducing environmental impact.
The rice paddy midseason drainage extension project will be conducted nationwide, while the biochar project will cover Nagano Prefecture. The rice paddy project aims to reduce methane emissions by extending the midseason drainage period by 7 days beyond the normal period. The biochar project aims to curb CO2 emissions by converting pruned branches into biochar and applying it to soil. Farmers are required to report their emissions reductions and the weight of biochar.
As a future goal, TOPPAN aims to increase J-Credit generation to 280t-CO2 by 2030 and will promote credit generation in cooperation with local governments and regional partners.
