Kongsberg Maritime plans to strengthen its Arctic propulsion portfolio by acquiring Finland-based Steerprop. The acquisition is reported to have been announced on 9 September 2026.
Steerprop designs and manufactures high ice-class azimuth propulsion systems and has established a leading position in Arctic propulsion. Its propulsion systems are installed on more than 400 vessels worldwide, and it has a substantial order backlog for Arctic and ice-class projects.
The acquisition will combine Steerprop’s Arctic propulsion technology with Kongsberg Maritime’s global organization, lifecycle service network and systems integration capabilities. It is expected to support fleet renewal, investment in polar research and expanded activity in the Arctic region.
Until the transaction closes, both companies will operate independently. Existing projects, deliveries and contracts will remain unchanged, with customer continuity given the highest priority.
