This article organizes and explains the key points to know when using Japan Communications SIM, including its pricing plans, reputation, disadvantages and cancellation procedures.
Japan Communications SIM mainly offers low-cost plans, but some users point to slow connection speeds. It is operated by Japan Communications Inc., the world’s first MVNO, and is characterized by no cancellation fees or minimum-term commitments, online-only service and few physical stores. Plans include Simple 290 at 1GB for ¥290, the 20GB Minna’s Plan and a 50GB plan.
There are 3 main plans, with monthly fees of ¥290, ¥1,390 and ¥2,178 depending on the data allowance. Domestic calls cost ¥11 per 30 seconds, which is relatively inexpensive. Additional data is available in 1GB increments for ¥220, and call options are offered for each plan, including 70 minutes of free calls per month.
The service uses the DOCOMO network, and 5G is available by applying for the option. The company does not sell devices, supports SIM cards and eSIMs, and primarily accepts credit and debit card payments. Prepaid payment is not available.
Disadvantages include online-only service and limited physical stores, as well as no carryover of data to the following month and no data sharing. Smartphones are not sold. Applications are primarily online, with MNP and one-stop procedures available for new applications and transfers.
A starter-pack discount code may eliminate the ¥3,300 initial fee, but care is required because the resulting price may be higher than the regular price, and the code’s expiry date should also be checked.
