BroadBand Tower and Hokuden Information announced that they will collaborate on reselling a data center in Ishikari based on electricity generated entirely from renewable energy. The partnership will integrate sales channels for colocation, internet connectivity and related optional services, creating a structure that provides unified support from quotations through deployment assistance and the start of service.
Potential primary uses include AI and high-performance computing, which require high-load processing, as well as disaster-recovery and backup sites. The companies intend to capitalize on operational support from a local base and rapid on-site response. The initiative comes against a backdrop of increasing data-center density and power consumption as generative AI and other technologies spread, together with growing demand for decarbonization.
The collaboration combines BroadBand Tower's connectivity expertise at its Otemachi, Tokyo base with Hokuden Information's operational track record in the Sapporo area, with the aim of strengthening proposals that integrate local support and network design. It could also contribute to regional revitalization and the promotion of GX in the future.
The initiative is also positioned as a pioneering example in line with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' concept of linking watts and bits. Its benefits include using 100% renewable electricity while securing connectivity comparable to that available in central urban areas. At the same time, potential issues include latency arising from distributed data centers, long-term procurement costs and the need to secure redundancy.
