富士急行 has revealed the full concept for “SADEN,” a day-use sauna facility repurposing retired train cars. The facility will make special use of a 1000 Series trainset after the end of regular service and is scheduled to open at Shimoyoshida Station in December 2026.
富士急行 has released details of “SADEN,” a day-use sauna facility at Shimoyoshida Station (Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi). The facility will use the 1000 Series 1001 trainset, which ended regular service in December 2024, and is scheduled to open in December 2026. The project is described as Japan's first attempt to use retired operational train cars as a sauna facility.
The local-train sauna will feature a main sauna room with facing bench seats and hanging straps, where visitors can enjoy the heat from a wood-burning stove. A standing sauna experience while holding onto the straps will also be available. Counter seats will be installed by the windows, offering views of the platform and trains.
The sleeper-train sauna will be a two-tier bunk-style sauna room modeled on a sleeper train, allowing visitors to enjoy lying-down sauna sessions. The upper level will be designed for more intense heat, while the lower level will offer a gentler temperature. Self-service löyly using an electric heater is also planned.
The cold-plunge train will have a cold plunge approximately 70 cm deep installed in the car connecting the sauna rooms. Visitors will be able to move between the sauna rooms and the cold plunge inside the train, providing an experience like travelling by rail.
