The Professional Baseball Owners' Meeting was held in Tokyo, where the designation of Iijima Akimi (飯島彰己) as the next commissioner was unanimously approved. Following formal approval at the November owners' meeting, he is scheduled to take office effective 7 December.
Commissioner Sakakibara Sadanobu (榊原定征) will leave office after completing two four-year terms and will become an adviser thereafter.
The selection process has been conducted since last year by a committee comprising the owners of the Yomiuri Giants, Hanshin Tigers, Orix Buffaloes, Saitama Seibu Lions, Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters and Yokohama DeNA BayStars. Iijima was chosen following recommendations from multiple owners. He was evaluated as a business leader, having served as president of Mitsui & Co., with international experience.
