A scale-up demonstration will begin in Indonesia for the production of bioethanol using oil-palm waste wood and the commercial supply of SAF feedstock. Equipment will be installed locally to validate the full process of producing sugar solution from OPT and fermenting it.
Electric Power Development Co.,Ltd. (J-POWER) and Green Earth Institute Co., Ltd. have signed an outsourcing agreement to begin a scale-up demonstration aimed at commercializing a business in the Republic of Indonesia that produces bioethanol and biomass fuel from oil-palm waste wood (OPT). Based on the business feasibility assessment conducted to date, the demonstration marks a transition to the stage of preparing for the social implementation of a commercial plant.
The demonstration will involve installing equipment near Jakarta in Indonesia and validating the full process of producing and fermenting sugar solution from OPT. It will use large-scale fermentation equipment and other facilities of Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency, and the scale-up demonstration is scheduled to continue through 2027. The knowledge gained is expected to support the future production of SAF feedstock.
Regarding the investment and assessment process to date, following an investment in 2019, the companies proceeded with a business feasibility assessment of a combined business involving bioethanol and biomass fuel from OPT. The project is now moving to the next stage, a scale-up demonstration.
The business is characterized by its production of bioethanol from non-food feedstocks and aims to make effective use of unused resources without deforestation. Future use as SAF feedstock is envisaged.
