Nippon Steel's GX Steel NSCarbolex Neutral has been adopted for the Itabitsu River bank protection works (8-1), commissioned by Kitakyushu City, marking the first nationwide case of adoption with costs borne by a municipality.
GX Steel NSCarbolex Neutral will be applied to the Itabitsu River bank protection works (8-1), commissioned by Kitakyushu City. The works are scheduled to run from 6 August 2026 to 31 March 2027, and the product is expected to be used in steel sheet piles at the site.
This will be the first nationwide model project in which a municipality bears the cost of adopting GX Steel. Kitakyushu City aims to become a sustainable city that leads the world and to create a new model case that treats decarbonization as a source of value.
NSCarbolex Neutral is a product that pools within the organization GHG emissions reductions from additionality-based reduction projects and supplies them together with certificates. Its guidelines comply with the standards of the Japan Iron and Steel Federation. Buyers are said to be able to deduct and report the emissions reductions stated on the certificates against upstream emissions or at the product level.
Nippon Steel has been advancing an integrated production system for high-grade steel using a large electric arc furnace at the Yawata Area of its Kyushu Works, while pursuing decarbonization initiatives. It has also stated its policy of contributing to the realization of a carbon-neutral society in cooperation with local communities.
