A plan to bring back the RX-7’s indispensable auxiliary component, the metering oil pump known as “Metapon,” has been launched with long-established Japanese parts manufacturer ミクニ at its center. The start of the study was announced at the Haruna Rotary Meeting, and the project is moving forward although the specific launch timing and price remain undecided.
The metering oil pump, essential for maintaining the durability of rotary engines and commonly known as “Metapon,” has become difficult to obtain after production ended for the electronically controlled versions used in the later FC3S and early FD3S versions of the still-popular RX-7. Following an approach from Mazda, long-established Japanese parts manufacturer ミクニ has begun work as a candidate to bring back this key component. The focus of the revival is supplying it as a replacement part, with the company considering a low-volume, high-mix production system.
ミクニ has a long track record extending from the Cosmo Sport through the early FC3S version of the RX-7 for mechanical Metapon pumps, as well as for the mechanical versions used in the later FD3S and early RX-8 and the solenoid-operated versions used in the later RX-8. The revival plan is being considered on the basis of that experience and expertise, and the company has begun studying the development of genuine replacement parts for future supply.
At the Haruna Rotary Meeting (May 2026), consideration of reproducing the Metapon for the later FC3S version was disclosed, while the launch timing and price were left undecided. A central figure at ミクニ said the company plans to combine a profitable business model for low-volume parts with the creation of flexible production lines, and that it will advance the transfer of technical expertise through the Takumi Project.
