Construction of new factories is advancing around Boise, home to semiconductor companies including Micron, against the backdrop of the AI boom. Employment is expanding, while the region is also seeing impacts such as heavier traffic congestion and rising housing costs. The new facilities are scheduled to begin operations in 2027, and investment in regional development is also planned.
The AI boom is driving the construction of data centers and component-manufacturing facilities needed for AI development around the world, and Micron is moving forward with an expansion plan in Boise, Idaho. New semiconductor factories are being built around Boise, and regional development is expected to accelerate.
Micron employs approximately 7,000 people in Boise and the surrounding area. Local investor Dave Pezzo has pointed to the increase in employees’ wealth resulting from the rise in the company’s share price. More than 17,000 additional jobs are expected to be created at the new facilities.
The first phase of the new factories is scheduled to begin operations in 2027. Micron has announced plans to invest $75 million jointly with the state in regional development, with funding also expected to support education and workforce development.
Locals say the effects of population growth, including heavier traffic congestion and rising housing costs, are becoming increasingly apparent. Dissatisfaction has also been voiced over changes to lifestyles and the appearance of the community.
