NTT has announced plans to roll out AI-ready data centers nationwide. IT equipment power capacity is expected to increase from the current approximately 2,366 MVA to approximately 4,500 MVA by the end of 2029, with new liquid-cooling-ready data centers to be built in Tokyo’s 23 wards and Fukuoka City.
NTT has announced plans to roll out AI-ready data centers nationwide and build liquid-cooling-ready data centers in Tokyo’s 23 wards and Fukuoka City. Both are scheduled for completion in 2029, with sites to be selected in areas close to IX connectivity points and cloud hubs. Liquid-cooling technology will be provided as a standard feature to improve AI processing capacity and address heat-related issues.
The expansion in domestic data center demand is reportedly being driven by efforts to prepare for the domestic development and operation of AI, and NTT said it would position its data centers as suitable for sovereign AI.
According to IDC Japan statistics, domestic IT power capacity was approximately 2,366 MVA as of the end of 2024 and is expected to nearly double to approximately 4,500 MVA by the end of 2029. In response to this growing demand, NTT will promote the adoption of liquid-cooled data centers.
Going forward, consideration of deployments is expected to continue, taking into account the distributed placement of AI data centers, collaboration with overseas companies, and security and confidentiality requirements in Japan and abroad.
