Six companies in the Mizuho Financial Group, led by Mizuho Financial Group, published the "Mizuho Reduction Contribution Focus Report 2026," summarizing global trends in reduction contributions, the disclosure status of Japanese companies and their use by financial institutions.
The report was published by six companies in the Mizuho Financial Group, including Mizuho Financial Group, and is its third edition. Reduction contribution is defined as an indicator that quantifies the amount by which companies reduce greenhouse-gas emissions across society through their products and services. It notes that standards and disclosure platforms are being developed, particularly in Europe and Japan. Disclosure of reduction contributions by Japanese companies is increasing, and the metric is attracting attention as an indicator of climate-related opportunities and sustainability assessments.
The report organizes global trends in reduction contributions and outlines the current progress in revising standards, developing sector-specific guidance and establishing disclosure platforms, while summarizing the expansion of disclosures by Japanese companies. It emphasizes that greater use by financial institutions will strengthen the metric's role as a financing and investment-target assessment indicator.
Regarding disclosure by Japanese companies, the number of disclosures in fiscal 2025 was 146 companies in TOPIX 500 and 98 other companies, continuing to increase from the previous year. The report states that demand remains for voluntary disclosure of reduction contributions even as the statutory framework for sustainability information disclosure advances, and also discusses converting the metric into economic value using a carbon price.
Mizuho states that it will expand support for customers through assistance with calculating and disclosing reduction contributions and through financing activities. It concludes that expanding companies' disclosure of solutions, implementing evaluation and financing by financial institutions, sharing knowledge and developing common infrastructure will be key to future adoption and expansion.
