Hokuriku Bank and Hokkaido Bank, both under Hokuhoku Financial Group, Inc., signed an agreement with Hokkaido Gas on 5 October to introduce carbon-offset city gas using J-Credits from Hokkaido-owned forests.
The program covers 47 sites in Hokkaido and is expected to effectively reduce the group's overall annual CO2 emissions by approximately 310 tonnes.
Under the program, CO2 emissions generated when city gas is burned will be offset with J-Credits from Hokkaido-owned forests. From gas meter readings for October 2026 onward, city gas consumption at the covered facilities is expected to be treated as effectively zero, using credits absorbed or generated by Hokkaido's forests.
