NXTech, a subsidiary of SAAF Holdings, began a demonstration of the lightning detection and forecasting IoT system “Mimawari Denshobato” at a tunnel construction site being developed by Taisei Corporation. The objectives are to reduce the risk of accidental detonation caused by lightning strikes during blasting operations using electric detonators and to enhance safety management at the site.
The lightning detection system detects thunderclouds within a 40-km radius and uses the Japan Meteorological Agency’s Lightning Nowcast to provide forecasts of approaching lightning for up to 60 minutes ahead. In dangerous conditions, administrators are notified by email or LINE, while workers receive warnings through stack lights and LED displays.
Collected measurement data and warning histories are automatically saved, which is expected to improve the efficiency of preparing safety management reports and daily reports. Based on the demonstration results, the company plans to expand digital transformation in safety management at construction and civil engineering sites.
