The Nikkei average rebounded in the Tokyo market's morning session, with broad-based buying of AI and semiconductor-related stocks making the recovery more pronounced. Buying and selling then crossed in the latter half of the session, and signs of a loss of momentum emerged.
In the morning session of the Tokyo stock market, the Nikkei average closed at ¥63,381.29, up ¥1,191.06 from the previous day, as interest in AI and semiconductor-related stocks spread and supported the market's recovery. Ahead of monetary policy meetings in Japan, the United States and Europe, sentiment shifted toward assessing US hyperscalers' earnings and other developments before the afternoon session, and gains began to stall from mid-session. Earlier, gains briefly widened, with the index at one point rising as high as ¥63,684.69, up 2.4% from the previous day.
Following Anthropic's filing for an initial public offering, investors focused on the possibility that the uptrend in US technology stocks would spread to the Tokyo market. AI and semiconductor-related stocks led the broader advance, while the rise in the KOSPI also provided support. In the afternoon session, the prevailing view was that factors capable of influencing the market's direction would be limited amid expectations that Japan, the United States and Europe would refrain from raising interest rates.
