The introduction of autonomous driving is expected to begin with local governments, with consideration being given to using implementation areas based on nationally designated areas and to developments including autonomous driving for private vehicles. The possibility of prioritising deployment through mobility services has been suggested, along with a roadmap for gradual nationwide expansion and entry into Asia.
Regarding the introduction of autonomous driving, a policy of beginning with local governments has been outlined, and proposals have been discussed to refer to designated areas such as the priority areas for the commercialisation and social implementation of autonomous driving designated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
Although autonomous driving for privately owned vehicles remains a possibility, deployment as a mobility service may be prioritised initially. Some believe that private vehicles will remain at around Level 2++.
The preferred approach is to establish public confidence and safety through early adoption by local governments, then pursue nationwide deployment and subsequently expand into Asia. This view was presented alongside the author’s first-hand experiences.
The author has experienced autonomous mobility services in Hitachi and Komatsu and believes that adoption beginning in regional areas will help drive wider deployment.
