In Tokyo trading on the 4th, dollar-yen held around ¥156 in afternoon trading, while buying following the sharp fall from the previous day had run its course. Trading was subdued as investors awaited the release of the U.S. August jobs report.
In overseas markets, selling continued through the previous day's European and U.S. sessions. Dollar-yen was around ¥157 early in the European session but fell to around ¥156.50 at one point midway through the U.S. session. It returned to around ¥156 late in the session.
In the morning, remarks by Finance Ministry Vice-Minister for International Affairs Mimura (三村) triggered dollar-yen selling, but buying on dips emerged and the pair began to recover. In the afternoon, buying following the sharp fall took the lead, but trading ultimately remained limited as investors awaited the U.S. jobs report. The euro remained range-bound against both the yen and the dollar late in the session.
