CDP has published a report analyzing response data from approximately 11,000 SMEs worldwide on environmental information disclosure and governance. While many respondent companies have made progress in establishing their management foundations, including governance structures and risk management processes, the report found that only around 20% have set environmental targets.
The findings show progress on indicators including governance and the identification, assessment and management of risks. However, only 20% of SMEs have set specific greenhouse gas emissions-reduction targets, while 32% of companies are implementing emissions-reduction initiatives.
There are also significant regional differences. The report notes that the EU is making progress in adopting voluntary reporting standards for unlisted SMEs, while Singapore and the US are lagging behind.
For Japanese SMEs, stakeholder engagement was identified as the biggest challenge, and promoting engagement going forward was cited as an issue to be addressed.
