While video-related products, including HOYA’s founding optical glass business, account for only 6% of its revenue, the company is transforming its business portfolio, with Life Care and Information and Communications as its core businesses. Further portfolio reviews, including M&A, are expected to continue.
Looking at HOYA’s revenue mix, Life Care accounts for 62% and Information and Communications for 37%, while video-related products, including its founding optical glass business, account for only 6% of total revenue. The company has consequently transformed its business portfolio significantly.
HOYA has built up its businesses through acquisitions in areas including semiconductors, endoscopes, intraocular lenses and eyeglass lenses, while selling or withdrawing from businesses such as cameras and crystals. It is currently considering strategic options, including a third-party transfer of its medical endoscope business, and plans to continue reviewing its portfolio for the time being.
In the past, HOYA acquired the semiconductor photomask manufacturing division from Oki Electric Industry, acquired the HDD glass disk business from Nippon Sheet Glass in 2004, and made PENTAX a subsidiary in 2007, bringing its medical and imaging businesses into the group. It ended the crystal business in 2009, transferred its HDD glass media business to WD in 2010, and transferred the PENTAX Imaging Systems business to Ricoh in 2011.
Since entering the 2020s, HOYA has accumulated acquisitions in the Life Care field and accelerated its business restructuring, including the transfer of its speech synthesis software business to a special-purpose company in 2025. Revenue for the fiscal year ending March 2026 was ¥947.749 billion, with Life Care accounting for 62%, Information and Communications for 37%, and video-related products contributing 6%.
In July 2026, HOYA began considering strategic options for the medical endoscope business brought into the group through its acquisition of PENTAX. The company has indicated that it will continue reshaping its portfolio through M&A, business investment, transfers and withdrawals while identifying niche markets.
