Several human rights situation reports prepared by a seminar at Kansai Gaidai University were adopted for the summary documents used in the UN Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review. The reports cover 6 countries, and citations in future reviews may expand.
Some of the human rights situation reports on various countries prepared by the Global Engagement Research Group seminar led by Associate Professor Fukuda Kazuo (福田 和生) of the Faculty of Global Engagement at Kansai Gaidai University were successively adopted for the summary documents used in the UN Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review. The countries covered are Bhutan (2024), Laos and Malawi (2025), and Nepal, Namibia and Tanzania (all in 2026), with the reports cited and referenced in reviews of a total of 6 countries.
The seminar scrutinizes materials from the United Nations, international organizations and national governments, sometimes reviewing more than 100 sources, and prepares reports focusing in particular on children's rights, women's rights and the right to education. Cases in which submissions from Japan are cited are uncommon, and for the summaries on these 6 countries, only reports from Kansai Gaidai University were cited.
In the Tanzania review, 4 citations and 14 references were identified in the summary. The university's reports have demonstrated their presence through citations in multiple places and numerous references. The seminar has also submitted reports on South Sudan, Moldova and Timor-Leste, and preparation of the summaries is under way.
The university's in-depth and sustained research on human rights issues is being recognized as its submissions and activities expand to additional countries. Kansai Gaidai University intends to continue contributing to human rights issues in developing countries, and according to its official announcement, aims to expand citations in further reviews.
