The Nikkei 225 rebounded ¥806 to ¥65,020. With the US jobs report due, a pause in the rise in long-term interest rates supported investor sentiment.
The Nikkei 225 opened ¥284 higher in the Tokyo market and had risen to ¥64,769 by the morning close. It extended its gains in the afternoon, reaching an intraday high of ¥65,182 at 2:52 p.m. before closing at ¥65,020, up ¥806. The TOPIX maintained a slight gain, while advances in emerging-market stocks also stood out.
Among individual stocks, SoftBank Group extended its gains sharply, rising 11.8% to ¥5,590. The company’s announcement of a long-term bond issue was seen as a positive catalyst. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, meanwhile, fell 3.1% to ¥6,969, reversing its recent gains. Buying predominated in FANUC, which rose 3.0% to ¥5,931, and ABEJA, which gained 5.7% to ¥3,075. Meiji Holdings fell 2.9% to ¥4,408 as selling emerged following the decline in consumer spending.
The market moved with caution receding ahead of the US jobs report, rather than in response to Bank of Japan-related developments. Funds flowed into AI-related and semiconductor stocks, while the pause in rising interest rates was said to have improved investor sentiment. The following day’s market reaction could be affected by the outcome of tonight’s US jobs report.
