Sony may announce a revival of the MDR-3 headphones supplied with the original Walkman. Based on a teaser video and an announcement of the release time in Japan, the product is reportedly expected to be unveiled as a new product on 6 November.
A teaser suggesting that Sony may announce a revival of the MDR-3 headphones, which were introduced around the same time as the original Walkman "TPS-L2," released in 1979, has attracted attention. The name "MDR-3R" has been proposed for the revived model, but no formal announcement has yet been made.
The overseas teaser is scheduled for 8:00 on 5 November 2026 in U.S. PST, or 1:00 on 6 November in Japan. Sony's official website says that a new product will be announced at 9:00 that morning. The official video contains the messages "New yet, original…" and "New yet, familiar…," and has also been interpreted as hinting at a new model with a design reminiscent of a past product.
The video shows a blue and orange color scheme. The blue has been noted as evoking the MDR-3 series, while the orange is said to evoke the MDR-4L1S. Sony has announced the release date with the message "The future of that day, at your ears," but the official product name and specifications remain undisclosed.
Reports at this stage are awaiting Sony's official announcement, while interest is growing in developments surrounding a revival of past Walkman headphones. Details of the official name, connectivity and acoustic specifications will have to await a future announcement.
