GS Yuasa announced plans to establish a new plant for stationary storage systems in Ibaraki, Ibaraki Prefecture. The company will lease approximately 100,000 square meters of factory land from AESC Japan and acquire the buildings. Total floor space will be approximately 44,000 square meters, and the company is also considering purchasing the land.
The investment, including the buildings and production equipment, will total approximately ¥71.3 billion. Production equipment will be installed, with supply scheduled to begin in October 2028. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is expected to provide a subsidy of up to ¥24.8 billion, while Ibaraki Prefecture is expected to provide approximately ¥300 million. The planned workforce is approximately 300.
The plant will produce stationary storage systems, for which demand is rising as renewable energy gains wider adoption. Annual production capacity for lithium-ion batteries used in storage systems will be 2 gigawatt-hours, approximately seven times that of GS Yuasa's existing plant in Shiga Prefecture.
GS Yuasa is strengthening its renewable energy-related lithium-ion battery business. Demand for storage batteries is expected to grow as the expansion of solar and wind power generation increases the need to support the stability of the power grid.
