According to Kyodo News in New York, major U.S. media company Skydance has completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). The total acquisition price is reportedly on the order of $110 billion, or approximately ¥17 trillion, creating a major media company centered on Hollywood's two major film studios, each with more than 100 years of history.
Following the integration, the company plans to retain the Paramount and Warner film studios and produce more than 30 films annually. Its streaming service has approximately 200 million subscribers, and it plans to supply films and programs to competitors including Netflix. The company says it aims to achieve more than $6 billion in earnings improvement within 3 years by streamlining its technology infrastructure and administrative functions.
As for the background to the acquisition, WBD sold its film studios and other assets and initially reached an agreement with Netflix in December 2025, before Skydance launched a hostile takeover bid and reversed the outcome. On the 2nd of this month, it changed its corporate name from Paramount Skydance to Skydance and announced the transition to the Skydance name in conjunction with completion of the acquisition.
