Helical Fusion and Fuji Electric have formed a capital and business alliance, with Fuji Electric joining as an official partner of Helical Fusion. They have announced a concrete framework for cooperation to accelerate the Helix project’s commercial power generation.
Helical Fusion and Fuji Electric have entered into a capital and business alliance aimed at achieving commercial power generation from fusion energy, with Fuji Electric joining as an official partner of Helical Fusion. They will jointly consider the technology and business development of the Helix project’s integrated demonstration device and first power-generating unit.
The Helix project aims to complete the individual demonstrations of its two core development elements, high-temperature superconducting magnets and a blanket-cum-divertor, during the 2020s, and to realise Helix HARUKA, the integrated demonstration device, and Helix KANATA, the first power-generating unit, in the 2030s. Component development and manufacturing for Haruka are currently under way in dedicated facilities at NIFS (National Institute for Fusion Science).
The official partner program involves technology and business partnerships and capital partnerships above a certain amount, with partners jointly promoting the manufacture and construction of Helix HARUKA and related initiatives. The program was launched in April 2026, with ニチアス, 長谷虎紡績, 瀬野汽船 and 安藤・間 participating as the first partners.
A commercial fusion reactor must meet all three requirements: steady-state operation, net power generation and maintainability. The Helix project is said to be proceeding with development based on a design that meets these requirements. The direction of the government’s support policy is also a factor, with demonstrations in the 2030s and an investment plan for 2040 having been outlined.
