Kansai Electric Power announced that it will retire 2 thermal generating units at Himeji No. 1 Power Station on 2028-02-29 and aims to build and begin operating 3 new units on the site.
Kansai Electric Power plans to retire the 2 thermal generating units currently in operation at Himeji No. 1 Power Station on 2028-02-29 because of the plant's aging facilities. It plans to introduce 3 new thermal generating units on the site, with total capacity expected to reach approximately 1.95 million kW.
The combined output of the 3 new units is expected to be approximately 40% higher than the current output, while generation efficiency is expected to improve to approximately 63% from the current level of approximately 54%. If operated under the same conditions, CO2 emissions are expected to fall by approximately 10%.
Approximately 140 employees currently work at Himeji No. 1 Power Station. After the 2 units are retired, approximately 60 employees are expected to be needed, and reassignment of the remaining employees is under consideration. The investment amount has not been disclosed.
The power station began operating in 1955 and switched its fuel from heavy oil to natural gas in 1987. Units 1 through 4 were retired in 2001, leaving Units 5 and 6 currently in operation.
