Viva Republica, which operates South Korea’s Toss, will acquire Japan’s mobile brokerage Cheer Securities. The transaction is estimated at approximately ¥4 billion (approximately ₩34 billion), with completion targeted during fiscal 2026.
Tokai Tokyo Financial Group resolved to acquire 100% of the shares of Cheer Securities rather than establish a new local entity for Toss. The acquiring entity will be Singapore-based Toss Global, and the transaction is planned to close after receiving approval from the relevant local authorities.
Cheer Securities provides smartphone-focused services for small-value investments, including fractional-share investing, which allows orders for stocks and ETFs in ¥100 increments, and STO trading. Its possession of a Type I Financial Instruments Business license and approval related to the distribution of STOs is cited as a factor behind the acquisition.
Toss has been strengthening its track record in overseas equity brokerage, with overseas equity commissions expanding since 2022. Through the acquisition of Cheer Securities, it plans to add Japanese equity trading to its offering and expand its overseas business while strengthening its operating base.
As interest in investing among younger people grows in Japan, the company plans to operate its services in accordance with Japanese laws and regulations. Because the approval procedures remain outstanding, the timing of closing and the launch schedule for local services remain undecided, and attention is focused on future developments.
