The Nikkei 225 opened on the 4th at ¥64,498.94, up ¥284.46, beginning trading with its first rebound in five sessions. Buying prevailed at the open against the backdrop of the sharp advance in U.S. stocks the previous day.
The rise in the Dow and Nasdaq, together with the trend of welcoming lower long-term interest rates following the Federal Reserve, supported the Nikkei 225, while the retreat in the risk of a rate hike this year prompted buying on dips. At the same time, higher oil prices and movements in overseas markets remained points of caution.
By sector, securities and commodity futures, insurance, services, nonferrous metals, and information and telecommunications rose, while textiles, pharmaceuticals, and rubber products declined. SoftBank Group, Furukawa Electric and Nitori Holdings ranked among the top stocks by trading value, while Takeda Pharmaceutical and Mitsubishi Corp. were among the decliners.
A decline in real household consumption expenditures in the July Family Income and Expenditure Survey was cited as one of the day’s market factors, and was said to have possibly influenced buyers’ reluctance to buy after the open. The market is expected to develop while investors assess the release of the U.S. employment report.
