The Nikkei extended its decline in the morning session, ending trading around ¥64,512.35. Selling in SoftBank Group and nonferrous metal stocks supported the market.
The Nikkei ended the morning session at ¥64,512.35, down ¥404.35. Estimated volume was approximately 869.56 million shares, while U.S. stocks were mixed. The Dow edged lower and the Nasdaq remained firm, but selling led the Nikkei lower amid firm long-term U.S. Treasury yields and persistently high oil prices.
After the open, selling spread in stocks with a high contribution to the index, including SoftBank Group and Fujikura, weighing on the Nikkei. Meanwhile, semiconductor-related stocks such as Advantest saw periods of buying.
Among individual stocks, Advantest, Fast Retailing, Konami Group, Terumo and Nintendo rose. SoftBank Group, Fujikura, Kyocera, TDK, FANUC, Recruit Holdings and KIOXIA fell.
In the afternoon session, trading was expected to remain mixed while the decline from the morning close narrowed. The movements of Nikkei 225 futures and the U.S. Nasdaq remained areas of concern.
(AK) As a FISCO market overview, movements on the TSE Prime Market and in stocks with a high contribution to the indices were expected to remain the focus.
