According to Proofpoint research, DMARC adoption among Japanese companies and government agencies is progressing, while there remains a substantial gap in enforcement levels between Japan and the United States and between Japanese and US government agencies.
This study analyzes DMARC adoption and enforcement among Nikkei 225 companies, US Fortune 1000 companies, and Japanese and US government agencies, outlining the current status and challenges facing Japanese companies and government agencies. The analysis covers major Japanese and US companies as well as Japanese and US government-related domains, and discusses the effectiveness of DMARC policy settings.
The DMARC adoption rate among Nikkei 225 companies has reached 92%, indicating substantial progress in adoption, while the full enforcement rate using Reject or Quarantine remains at 43%. Among Fortune 1000 companies, the adoption rate is 98% and the full enforcement rate has reached 83%, indicating that rejection and quarantine policies are being actively implemented.
Among government agencies in Japan and the United States, Reject adoption among Japanese government domains remains at 18%, while 61% use None and 12% have not adopted DMARC. By contrast, all US government-related domains use Reject, highlighting the clear gap in enforcement levels between Japan and the United States.
By industry, Japanese financial and manufacturing companies have made progress in enforcement, while information and communications and real estate companies have higher rates of None, making post-adoption policy strengthening a key challenge. In the United States, Reject and Quarantine account for more than half of domains in many industries, indicating that enforcement has progressed further than in Japan.
