The New York market ended lower for a second straight session on the 11th. The Dow average ended at 53,791.85, down 184.13 from the previous day, while the Nasdaq ended at 26,445.45, down 159.91. The CME Nikkei 225 futures settlement was ¥67,065, up ¥340 from the Osaka Exchange.
After the open, stocks traded firmly as interest rates fell in response to employment-related indicators. However, selling became dominant toward the middle of the session as investors reacted negatively to rising oil prices amid difficult negotiations with Iran over the Strait of Hormuz, and losses widened toward the close.
Selling intensified late in the session as caution ahead of the consumer price index (CPI) release spread further. By sector, utilities and energy rose, while media and entertainment and retail declined. In the ADR market, Unicharm, Chugai Pharmaceutical and Japan Post, among others, were lower.
