Fukuda Naohisa (福田 尚久), president of Japan Communications Inc., discusses its reform and growth strategy for providing MVNO services on a cost basis. The company’s focus is on promoting secure communications through FPoS and local 4G/5G.
Japan Communications Inc. is built around its MVNO business and holds a unique position, enabling it to source voice and data services at carrier cost. Going forward, it plans to expand around its FPoS business, which uses digital IDs, and the development of private networks through local 4G/5G.
President and Representative Director Fukuda Naohisa (福田 尚久) explained that he joined the company in 2002 after gaining marketing experience at Apple, that it listed on the Hercules market in 2005, and that it listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2015. He said regulatory reform had enabled the company to source data and voice services on a cost basis.
The company’s business is centered on SIM sales, and it highlighted the advantage that MVNO operators can receive voice and communications services at cost. Following a 2007 ruling, access to the NTT DOCOMO network at cost became possible, and in 2020 voice services also became available on a cost basis, strengthening the company’s competitiveness.
Over the medium to long term, the company aims to establish a structure that can develop proprietary services at low cost, like Neo Career. FPoS aims to provide a smartphone ID that combines identity verification and authenticity, based on the use of the My Number Card. For local 4G/5G, the company is pursuing a low-cost system that enables customers to operate their own private networks.
In its message to investors, the company emphasized the uniqueness of its SIM business and annual growth of approximately 30%. It stressed the importance of proving identity in a digital society and indicated a policy of expanding the adoption of FPoS and local 4G/5G by developing use cases.
