Miyagi Prefecture is working to attract an SK hynix semiconductor plant and has proposed a candidate site of approximately 300,000 square meters near Sendai. Miyagi Prefecture has proposed to SK hynix a candidate site of approximately 300,000 square meters within the Second Sendai Northern Core Industrial Park in Ohira Village, near Sendai. One factor is that the site already has the water supply and power infrastructure required for a semiconductor plant.
The Japan-Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry is holding a meeting in Sendai on the 31st on the themes of AI and semiconductors, and the visit by SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won (崔泰源) has drawn attention locally. Governor Murai Yoshihiro (村井嘉浩) of Miyagi Prefecture also mentioned the possibility of meeting Chairman Choi at a press conference on the 26th, and the prefecture is contacting relevant parties while refraining from making an official announcement.
Nikkei identified approval by the South Korean government as the biggest variable in Miyagi Prefecture's plans to build a plant in Japan, pointing out that government review may be required for overseas production because of concerns over technology outflows. At the same time, there is also a view that moves to expand local production are continuing, partly due to pressure from the US government.
