The potato harvest that began in Hokkaido in September was almost complete by late October. Harvesting progressed in Biei and Nakasatsunai, with overall conditions described as pointing to a bumper crop. Reports also indicated high specific gravity and starch content.
Potato harvesting got into full swing in Hokkaido in September. This year, a cool climate and moderate rainfall supported stable growth, and harvesting progressed smoothly overall. Large quantities of potatoes were harvested in each production area, and some reports indicated high specific gravity and starch content.
In Biei in the Kamikawa area, broad fields stretch across the landscape, and harvesting could be seen in the fields of contracted growers. Biei is known for its rolling scenery, and harvesting sometimes continues until late in the evening.
In Nakasatsunai in the Tokachi area, there were occasions when 2 large harvesters operated simultaneously, as work progressed across the vast fields. During harvesting, soil is intentionally left in place as a cushion to reduce damage to the potatoes.
After harvesting, Hokkaido-grown potatoes are scheduled to be made into Calbee Group products and placed on store shelves nationwide. The Group expressed its gratitude to the contracted growers and others who supported the harvest.
