The Nikkei 225 extended its gains as buying back shares spread at the start of the afternoon session, supported by movements in semiconductor stocks. Trading was limited in the morning under the weight of lower U.S. stocks and large-cap shares.
In afternoon trading, the Nikkei 225 moved higher, opening the afternoon session above the previous day's level. Developments in the South Korean market and buying back semiconductor stocks supported the market, and the Nikkei 225 recovered some ground at one point. Trading volume and value were subdued in the morning, as investors continued to stay on the sidelines ahead of Nvidia's earnings and the Jackson Hole meeting.
Toward the morning close, the Nikkei 225 posted a modest rebound, while the TOPIX remained firm. Although the indexes rose from their morning closing levels, some semiconductor-related stocks fell, at times capping the market's upside. Trading value was ¥3.5309 trillion, and more than half of the listed issues rose, although the market also showed signs of losing momentum.
