In the Tokyo stock market on the 23rd, the Yomiuri Stock Price Index (Yomiuri 333) closed at ¥51,668.18, down ¥242.56 from the previous day. This marked a second consecutive decline. Of its constituent stocks, 204, or about 60%, fell.
The Nikkei Average closed at ¥62,693.16, down ¥214.68. While a broad range of stocks, led by AI- and semiconductor-related stocks, were sold following declines in US semiconductor stocks the previous day, government bonds were bought as a safe-haven asset. The resulting fall in the market yield on newly issued 10-year government bonds, a benchmark for long-term interest rates, contributed to declines in bank stocks.
The biggest decliners among Yomiuri 333 constituents included electronic components major TDK (-5.61%), Nippon Kohden (-5.16%) and Gunma Bank (-4.96%). Stocks that rose included Mercari (+7.33%), Sumitomo Forestry (+4.83%) and Aeon (+4.51%).
Across the market, about 60% of TSE Prime stocks declined, and TOPIX fell 31.69 points to 3,965.81.
